The Best Home Solar Companies

“Everyone should get solar. It makes too much financial sense!”

Raymond S.

Tip for the reader:

Stop wondering if switching to solar is worth it. This is the major investment that will pay you as a homeowner. Adding a deck or upgrading your kitchen may help resale value, but they don’t pay you today. Given that our mission is to help you, the homeowner, save money, this is really important to us.

Solar takes one of your largest annual expenses as a homeowner and essentially eliminates it. You can stop “renting” power from the utility and start owning your power. That is major savings today, tomorrow, and indefinitely into the future. Plus, if you finance it, you will be putting up none of your own money to reap the rewards and build equity in your house.

What should you do with this article?
1. Look at the best solar companies
2. Understand why their different technology matters
3. Understand how much money you will save!
4. Get quotes. They are FREE. They are FAST. And it can put you on a path to keeping your hard-earned money!

Vivint Solar

Vivint Solar Review

Pros

  • Multiple payment options available
  • 25-year linear performance warranty
  • Available across the United States

Cons

  • Annual price increase with PPA
  • Installation delays

Summary & Features

  • Transfer the agreement to the new homeowner
  • Pre-pay the rest of your contract
  • Relocate your solar panels to your new roof at no cost
  • Purchase the system outright (available for contracts older than six years)

Vivint also will do an in-house consultation with you if you want to proceed after getting a quote, where they will help you understand how much you can expect to save with their system.

Lastly, they will also help with battery storage, but unlike SunPower who develops their own battery, Vivint uses LG as their battery provider. LG is a very reputable company so that should not be concerning, but it is representative of the fact that with SunPower everything is a one-stop shop, while Vivint pulls from a few different suppliers. This can make breakdowns with your warranty a little trickier and is something to keep in mind.

With all that said, Vivint creates a positive customer experience with their A- BBB rating.

What Customers Are Saying

“We have had Vivint Solar for a few years now and been very happy with everything from the consultation,
installation, and system maintenance.”

“I’ve been a Vivint Solar customer for several years. The installation was seamless and the ongoing service has been great.
I save so much in energy costs.”

“The process was amazing. We did nothing. We didn’t have to worry about anything.”

“Hands down one of the best decisions I’ve made…”

SunPro Solar

SunPro Solar Review

Pros

  • Award-winning solar provider
  • Industry-leading warranties
  • 100% satisfaction guarantee

Cons

  • Limited payment options
  • Limited availability
  • LG panels, while efficient, have durability concerns relative to SunPower’s Maxeon panels

Summary & Features

Sunpro Solar was founded in 2008 and today is known to be one of the leading solar providers in the United States. So much so that in 2020 it was ranked number five in Solar Power World’s Magazine Top Residential Solar Installers in the United States. In addition to high-quality solar, Sunpro Solar also employs an in-house roofing company, Buildpro, which can install affordable, high-caliber roofing, ensuring optimal performance from your solar energy system.

Sunpro Solar has some of the strongest warranties and guarantees in the industry to back its products and services. Its 100% satisfaction guarantee is 25 years of labor coverage, power production, panel module performance, and microinverters guarantee. Thanks to Buildpro, a warranty covers even the professional roofing handled by Sunpro Solar against damage.

Like Vivint, this is an inferior system to SunPower’s given the panels have metal on top, which has the potential to crack, and they do not have microinverters for each panel which means the whole system can be impacted if there is an issue.

Unlike other solar providers out there, Sunpro Solar only has a limited amount of payment options and is only available in eighteen of the United States, though this is increasing to twenty-four fairly soon. While you do have the ability to either pay for your Sunpro Solar system outright or finance it with a loan, Sunpro Solar does not offer any sort of leasing or power purchase agreements to its customers at this time. Again, these are not the solutions we would advocate for but feel it’s important to mention that they are not options.

What Customers Are Saying

I cannot say enough good about Sunpro! They were thorough and efficient throughout our solar system purchase and installation.

“I decided to go with SunPro after speaking with multiple Vendors and couldn’t be happier.”

“Our family had been interested in going solar for a while now and began looking for a company. After reading reviews, we finally made the switch in 2019 and chose Sunpro.

Tesla Solar

Pros

  • Multiple payment options available
  • Free online solar evaluation
  • Iron Clad Power Protection Guarantee

Cons

  • Installations are outsourced
  • Limited availability across the country

Summary & Features

Tesla bought Elon’s Musks solar company Solar City in 2016 and is based out of Sacramento, California, providing alternative energy solutions in solar power to residential and commercial customers. Through Tesla Energy Solar Power, customers seeking solar options for any projects, small or large, can achieve their alternative energy aspirations using proven methodology and proven high-quality products and equipment.

To get started with the Tesla Energy Solar Power process, you begin by going online and uploading your latest power bill. Through this free solar evaluation, you will receive a certified quote and work directly with a Tesla Energy Solar Power sales representative to form the solar solution you need. Tesla Energy Solar Power provides a wide range of financing options, including no interest or no upfront costs, to kick start the project.

Tesla Energy Solar Power teams up with other companies for installation needs and therefore does not perform the installations themselves. While the companies they work with may be reputable, it adds an extra layer of risk to the project and research for you as the homeowner.

Tesla stands out with its Powerwall technology, which if we did not go with the fully integrated SunPower system, would be our preference for battery storage. Additionally, Tesla is trying to lead the technology towards a solar roof where the roofing tiles are the panels that generate the energy. At this time, the technology, and consequently the cost, is not at the point where we would recommend this to homeowners because the economics are not at all as good as what we lay out below. It is certainly a beautiful and interesting development in the industry and one we will be keeping a close eye on.

What Customers Are Saying

Tesla was very helpful and still is if we have any questions.

“Choosing Tesla Energy was an easy and simple decision”

Introduction to Solar Energy Companies

There are several different reasons solar power continues to be on the rise. Most importantly, though, is because it is one of the cleanest ways to produce energy currently. People opt to convert to solar energy because it can help reduce their carbon footprint, save them money, or both. Luckily for consumers, the price of switching to solar power continues to decline, making it more accessible than ever.

Studies by the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) have proven that solar installation costs have decreased an astonishing 70% in the last decade to an average of $18,000. This is due to a substantial improvement in technology and also the presence of government incentives in the form of tax breaks.

Are You Ever Wondering How Much You Would Save With Solar?

While the price tag might seem steep, consider that the expected savings are likely to wipe out your energy bill over the life of the system. With Sunpower’s industry-leading Maxeon technology, where the cells are expected to last for 40 years, the savings make the investment extremely appealing.

To help curb the upfront costs of installing your solar panels, most companies will offer various payment options, including direct purchase, financing, or even leasing. We are not fans of leasing the equipment, however, as we believe you are much better off financing the system.

Consider a conservative case where your system costs $18,000 and your annual energy savings are $2,000 per year (typically returns are slightly better than this). If you finance the system through the provider or go to a bank to finance via a home equity loan or HELOC, your interest rate may be in the 3% – 5% range. If we assume 4%, your annual interest expense will be $640. So, your net savings will be $2,000 in energy costs less the $640 in interest payments. This is $1,360 savings each year!

But we didn’t factor in that utilities typically raise power prices… and power price increases have averaged 1.4% over the past 10 years. This means your savings are going to get larger every year!

So, in this example, by year 40, you will have saved $81,229 by going solar… and that assumes you didn’t invest those savings. If you took those savings and reinvested them at 8% per year starting in year 12 once you have paid for the system, at the end of year 40 you will have saved $264,000!

What Is Solar Power?

According to the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA), solar power is converted from the sun’s energy into either thermal or electrical energy. In terms of solar power for residential and commercial purposes, it typically refers to converting electrical energy.

Solar power is an alternative power source to precious fossil energy, which has limited resources. It is gaining in popularity because it is one of the cleanest and the most abundant sources of renewable energy our planet has to offer. In the United States, specifically, there are some of the most plentiful solar resources available to consumers.

Thanks to advanced technology in the solar industry, you can harness solar power for various uses outside of generating electricity, including water heating for residential and commercial use.

Uses of Solar Power

Solar power can be turned into two different kinds of energy photovoltaic technology and concentrated solar power.

Photovoltaic Technology (PV)

The most common use of solar energy for residential purposes is through solar panels made up of a series of photovoltaic cells (or PV cells). Here’s how the process breaks down technically, explaining how the sun’s energy becomes electricity for your home.

  1. Sun releases photons
  2. Light from the sun (photons) hits the PV cells on your solar panels
  3. Electrons from the atoms travel through the conductor circuit
  4. Electricity is generated and redirected into your home

PV solar systems have three fundamental measures, watts, kilowatts, and kilowatt-hours (kWh). On average, residential solar panels produce around 250-400 watts and generate around 1kWh per day.

Concentrated Solar Power (CSP)

Concentrated solar power (or CSP) is more often used commercially, such as in power plants. Through CSP, mirrors and reflectors concentrate the photons from sunlight and collect the energy. The sun’s energy then becomes thermal energy.

Electricity is produced through CSP using significant power alternative sources such as turbines. This form of energy is also capable of being stored, allowing it to provide power throughout the day, regardless of the level of sunlight at any given time.

Benefits of Solar Power

As previously mentioned, there are various benefits to switching to solar power. Some of these benefits include:

Cost Savings

You might have noticed that your electricity bill fluctuates throughout the year. In addition to usage, there are different rates for peak seasons and even times, depending on your electricity service provider.

Residential electricity rates across the United States have risen nearly 15% over the last decade, and predictions anticipate them to continue to grow at this steady rate. Rather than dealing with fluctuations and steady increases, solar provides you with low and predictable rates that are materially lower than that of your utility company.

Free Yourself from Utility Companies

In addition to fluctuating costs of your utility bill, utility companies are also responsible for scheduled blackouts and also getting your power back up during an unscheduled blackout. When the power grid goes down, whether it be planned or unplanned by your utility company, you are relying entirely on the company to get your power back on as quickly as possible.

When you switch to solar power, you no longer have to stress about situations like these. Suppose you have a solar system entirely on its own or have a solar-powered battery system. In that case, you can avoid dealing with blackouts and other nuisances from your utility company by using only the energy you produce on your own, completely free and off the grid.

Environmentally Friendly Power Source

Fossil fuels, such as coal and natural gas, commonly used for residential purposes, release harmful pollutants and greenhouse gases into the environment. Alternatively, solar is an environmentally friendly solution that is clean, emission-free, and most importantly, renewable.

By switching to solar power, you are choosing to reduce your carbon footprint, and in turn, eliminate harmful emissions, such as carbon dioxide, which result from burning the limited source of fossil fuels.

Increase Your Home Value

Depending on where you live in the United States, you can significantly increase your home’s value by adding solar power. On average, you can expect a 4.1% increase in your home value just by adding solar panels.

So, whether you plan to live in your home for a long time or are worried about the value if you decide to move, switching over to solar power is a good idea that will pay for itself in the long run.

Qualify for Tax Breaks

As of 2021, the federal government offers a solar tax credit of 22% for either residential or commercial systems installed within the year. But you better act fast because this tax credit decreases annually. This tax credit will no longer be valid in 2022 unless Congress passes bills to keep it in place.

In addition to federal tax breaks, state tax credits and cash rebates are available depending on your location. Because this varies so drastically across the country, it is worth looking into further before installing your solar panels. You can check out the Database of State Incentives for Renewables & Efficiency (DSRE) to see if there are any tax credits or rebates in your local area.

Buyers’ Guide

When it comes to determining the best solar panel company for you, there are a few different features you’ll have to keep in mind, including the other solar panel manufacturers on the market, the varying payment options, and the warranty coverage.

Brand of Solar Panels

There are a wide variety of solar panel brands out there. Determining the best brand for you could be dependent on a multitude of different characteristics. Two of the standard ranking systems for solar panels are efficiency and temperature coefficient.

Efficiency

Measuring solar panel efficiency means measuring how good of a job it does at converting natural sunlight into electricity. Based on efficiency alone, here are the top five solar panel purchase options in the United States today:

  1. SunPower: 22.8%
  2. LG: 22.0%
  3. REC Group: 21.7%
  4. CSUN: 21.2%
  5. Panasonic: 21.2%

Temperature Coefficient

Another ranking measurement for solar panels is the temperature coefficient, which shows how much high temperatures impact a solar panel’s production. Based on temperature coefficient alone, here are the top five solar panel brands in the United States today:

  1. Panasonic: -0.26
  2. REC: -0.26
  3. Solartech Universal: -0.26
  4. SunSpark Technology: -0.28
  5. SunPower -0.29

Payment Options

Today, the average price associated with switching to solar energy on your residential property is about $18,000, although these costs can fluctuate depending on where you live within the United States, the system size, and the types of solar companies you choose.

Due to the increasing availability of solar panel companies, companies offer a wide variety of financing options to stay competitive. Having these options is beneficial to the consumer because it makes solar panels that much more accessible to the general public, regardless of cash on hand upfront.

Cash Purchase

The simplest way to pay for your solar panels is to pay for them outright in cash. When you pay for your system in cash, you receive the most possible savings over time for your system. You will also be eligible for tax credits and state incentives that come with installing your system.

Loan

Like a home or car loan, you can take out a loan to pay for your solar system. If you choose this payment method, you can reap the benefits of tax credits and state incentives. You will find a wide variety of banks, credit unions, and even solar companies offering loans to consumers.

Lease

A solar lease is essentially the same as a car lease in which you are responsible for paying a monthly fee for the solar panel company to put panels up on your roof. You receive the energy the panels produce and save on your electric bill without the expensive price tag of paying for the solar panels upfront.

Power Purchase Agreement (PPA)

When you enter a power purchase agreement with a solar provider, you pay for the power that your panels produce each month at a lower rate than your typical utility provider. The solar panel company is responsible for the installation and service of the discussions in this agreement.

Warranty

If you are making a large purchase, you always want to make sure that the company you are planning to do business with backs their products and services with a warranty of some sort. Solar panel companies will provide a series of different warranties, including inverter warranties. Still, the one you want to look out for the most is the materials warranty, also referred to as a product or equipment warranty.

At a minimum, most companies will offer a 10-year materials warranty, so you do not want to do business with a provider providing anything below that. The more reputable solar panel companies will guarantee against material failures for 15 or even 25 years.

Here is a list of some of the top solar panel companies that provide a 25-year materials warranty:

  • Axitec
  • Certainteed Solar
  • LG
  • Mission Solar
  • Panasonic
  • Q CELLS
  • REC
  • REC Group
  • Silfab
  • Solaria
  • SunPower
  • Winaico

In addition to materials warranties, solar panel companies should also be willing to provide a 25-year performance warranty. A performance warranty will guarantee that your solar panels will continue producing the allotted amount of electricity up to 80-90% through the duration of that warranty. If possible, check to see that the solar company provides a system warranty, which will cover a combination of the above.

Installation Companies vs. Solar Panels

One important element to think about is the fact that there is a difference between the panel producer and the installation company. This is another reason why we like Sunpower the best because you are dealing with one company for your solar panel system, as opposed to the other installers who are purchasing panels from another company. If something goes wrong with the panels, it is advantageous to only have to speak with one company versus calling your installer and having them then have to deal with the solar panel manufacturers.

Tips for Shoppers

Get Multiple Quotes from Solar Panel Manufacturers

Not surprisingly, you should always opt to get multiple quotes from different solar providers to complete thorough research on cost, quality, and ultimately value.

More Established Companies Will Charge More (And that’s ok!)

This is an important mantra to keep in mind when shopping around for solar providers. A study conducted by the United States Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) showed that large installers, which complete more than one thousand installations per year, may charge up to 10% more than smaller installers across the nation. As we mentioned with Sunpower, the quality, reliability, and durability are what you are paying for.

Compare Equipment

Not only are the large installers known for higher prices, but they also tend to provide fewer equipment options. While this might seem like a small detail, it is essential to do your homework and precisely determine what equipment your solar installer will be using to maximize your electricity production in your system.

FAQ

Do you still have questions? If so, we may be able to address them with these FAQs.

How Much Does It Cost to Get a Solar Panel System?

The average cost of installing a solar panel system varies by region. The national average for residential systems ranges in price from $3 to $5 per watt or anywhere from $15,000 to $25,000 for the entire plan.

Although this upfront cost might seem steep, many solar panel companies offer a wide range of payment options, including financing options, including no interest or no upfront costs to its customers. Additionally, the federal government provides a tax credit for installing solar systems to residential and commercial sites. Some states also offer additional incentives, but this varies state by state.

What Is the Federal Solar Tax Credit?

According to the United States Department of Energy, the federal solar tax credit is a tax credit claimed on your federal income taxes for up to a certain percentage of the cost of the installation of your solar system. This federal solar tax credit is valid in both residential or commercial systems.

The federal solar tax credit began in 2005 as a part of the Energy Policy Act of 2005 and started with a value at 30%. Since then, it has been decreasing, with its value in 2021 currently at 22%. The federal tax credit is due to expire in 2022 unless Congress renews it in time.

How Long Does a Solar Panel Installation Take?

The actual installation process will take 1 to 3 days depending on your roof and the size of the project. The whole process from quote to generating your own power can take 2-3 months.

The 2-3 month timeline happens as you work through the design phase (1-3 weeks), permitting with your local government (2-8 weeks – a good solar provider should be able to expedite this), the installation, local government inspections post-installation (1-4 weeks), and finally submitting documents and establishing power relationship with the local utility (3-6 weeks). Unfortunately, the major factor in how quickly your system starts saving you money is how quickly the government and utility can process your system post-installation.

Why Should I Switch to Solar?

The most obvious reason to switch to solar power is the cost savings. Changing your home or business over to solar energy will reduce costs significantly on your monthly electricity bill. Some solar providers even offer you the ability to go completely “off-grid,” meaning you directly produce all of the energy you will use in your home or business and have no monthly electricity bills to pay whatsoever. Like we have illustrated and customers pointed out, it’s the best investment you can make in your home.

In addition to cost savings, switching to solar is also the more environmentally friendly power solution. Running your home or office on solar energy will significantly decrease your environmental impact, minimizing your usage of precious fossil energy.

You may also be wondering what happens if it’s cloudy or there is shade blocking your panels…

Shading is a problem that your installer will try to avoid based on the location of your panels, but it is a fact that it will probably be encountered. This is where technology matters. The typical panel works as a long snaking system and if one part of the panel gets blocked that impacts the power generation of the whole panel. SunPower’s technology stands out in this regard because the flow of their power works differently. Ultimately, this means that you will be able to produce considerably more power with the better technology. To best illustrate it, please check out this video:

Final Thoughts

We feel strongly that you should go solar because it is the best investment a homeowner can make. Thanks to improving technology and government incentives the capital required to generate the savings is overwhelmingly in your favor.

As solar power is becoming increasingly popular, there are many companies out there from which to choose. Some of the best solar panel companies will offer high-quality products, lengthy warranties, and multiple financing options.

Keeping these features in consideration, we ultimately want you to prioritize the best technology because technology means that your system will operate at peak efficiency which is what creates the savings for you. Getting a slightly cheaper system with inferior technology is ultimately going to provide a much worse return to you over time – so always bet on the best technology!

Our top pick, overall, is SunPower Corporation and another one of the best residential solar energy companies is Vivint Solar, and we would recommend getting quotes from both so you can make an informed decision.
